One day at a time

By CHRIS MILLSPAUGH

The snow finally came this week and feelings of joy resonated throughout the valley. The snow is on the mountain, the streets are clear and a sense of calm emerges after three weeks of trying to figure out what is going on in our lives. I'm beginning to believe that the best course in life is to practice the concept of living each day and taking it one day at a time.

Today, for instance, is Jan. 22—a somewhat ordinary day of the year. But, every day has its value, I have learned, and its own particular history. Some days are good, others not so much. Today is no exception.

On this date in 2003, the United Nations reported that there was no connection between al-Qaida and the war in Iraq. In 1997, the space shuttle Atlantis returned successfully and safely to earth. In 1990, at the 17th annual American Music Awards, Milli-Vanilli took top honors and then it was found that they had lip-synched every word of their songs. The year before, on the same date, the San Francisco 49ers defeated the Cincinnati Bengals in Superbowl XXIII.

On Jan. 22, 1988, Mike Tyson scored a TKO over Larry Holmes to win the heavyweight boxing title. In 1976, a bank robbery in Beirut, Lebanon, netted over $20 million dollars. In 1973, there was Roe vs. Wade and in 1968, the premiere of "Rowan & Martin's Laugh In" on NBC and in 1946, the CIA was created—all on that same date, Jan. 22.

Thus, you never know what particular day is going to be special until you look back and discover what happened to make it so. We should all live each day as if it is our last. Time is so precious. Have a wonderful day.

Nice talking to you.
