Arritola headed to Olympics

Morgan Arritola, Ketchum resident and member of the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation, was officially named to the 2010 U.S. Olympics cross-country skiing team on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old Arritola, who grew up in Fairfield and graduated from The Community School in Sun Valley, was one of three women named to the 2009-10 A-Team roster of the U.S. Nordic Ski Team in May. This was a strong indication that she would make the trip to the 2010 Olympics. Arritola was aided by solid results to begin her race season this year.

According to the U.S. Ski Team Web site, the cross-country team will arrive in Vancouver on Feb. 9 to prepare for a schedule that includes 12 medal events.

Republican women donate to troops

Blaine County Republican Women are seeking donations to add to boxes for troops deployed out of Mountain Home Air Force Base serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The group adopted five servicemen based in Idaho through anysoldier.com and sends letters, cards and care packages every month.

"This personal approach to communicating with our troops lets them know that we care about them, we respect them and we pray for them," said Maureen Schwendener, who was donating from her store in Ketchum.

Another local businesswoman donated a box of new stuffed animals for the troops to hand out to Afghan and Iraqi children.

The group accepts both donations and financial aid to help defray shipping costs. Snacks, Chapstick, socks (male and female), slippers, iTunes gift cards, fresh coffee and shelf-stable food are all good choices. People can drop off gifts at Ascente Financial, upstairs in The Courtyard in Ketchum, 360 East Ave N., Suite 700, or call 726-3331 for further information.
