Girls basketball teams heading for the homestretch

Carey

Fifth in the IdahoSports.com power rankings for 1A Division II schools, the Lady Panthers showed their grit in a come-from-behind victory over the Challis Vikings, winning 56-51 at home Friday. The Vikings, who beat the Panthers by six points in early December, held a 32-23 lead at halftime, but Lane Durtschi's scrappy crew pulled a reversal by outscoring Challis 18-9 in the third to tie the contest 41-all. Carey was five points better than Challis in the final frame to avenge the earlier loss. Three Panthers posted double digits: Jessica Parke 18, Jaide Parke 12, and Amy Ellsworth 10.

Carey (10-3 overall, 5-1 league) is away to Bliss Thursday, and hosts Dietrich on Tuesday, which will be Senior Night for the Panthers. Seniors taking their final homecourt bows are Amy Ellsworth, Jessica Parke, Shurressa Rodriguez, Candace Hennefer and Taylor Whitby.

Wood River

The Wolverine girls dropped two games in a row for the first time this season. After losing to Jerome the week before, the Wolverines fell to Twin Falls 41-32 on the road Wednesday, but Mendy Benson's squad bounced back by beating Hillcrest 55-40 in Hailey Friday. Connecting on four three-pointers, KT Martinez netted a game-high 17 points, followed by Tristan Bowers with 11. Against the Bruins, Haylee Thompson topped the Wolverines' point column with 12. Martinez posted 11. Wood River (12-4) faces league rivals in the coming week, including Canyon Ridge in Twin Falls Thursday and Minico in Hailey Tuesday.

Community School

Top-ranked Dietrich defeated the Cutthroats 57-24 at the Fish Tank Thursday. Despite the tough going, Willy Felton's crew kept hustling against the talented Blue Devils (12-2), who collected their fifth league win. Sun Valley's top scorer was Maggie Flood with 10 points. Flood came within one point of the game's high scorer, Jessica Perron, who tallied 11 for Dietrich. Camas County will host the Cutthroats (2-7) on Jan. 26.
