Two speed bumps for WRHS cagers

Wood River High School basketball teams didn't have much to brag about last week—the girls suffering their biggest loss of the season to Jerome and the boys getting hammered by hot-shooting Kimberly.

Coach Mendy Benson's Wolverine girls (11-3, 3-3 league) stayed within striking range of #2-ranked 4A school Jerome for much of the first half Thursday, but the Tigers (13-1, 6-0) swept the season series by a 57-35 score with a 33-point second half. Jerome drilled five 3-pointers to none for Hailey.

Cheyenne Swanson (9 points) and Haylee Thompson (8) led Wood River, which dropped its second straight road game after five wins. The Wolverines travel to Twin Falls (7-6, 2-4) today, Wednesday, the Bruins having whipped Burley (8-5, 3-3) 60-31 last Thursday.

Wood River hosts Hillcrest of Idaho Falls Friday, Jan. 15.

Coach John Radford's Wolverine boys had no answer for Kimberly's blistering hot shooting and rebounding superiority Friday night in Hailey. Kimberly (2-5) avenged a nine-point home loss to Wood River with a 75-47 runaway victory.

Junior sharpshooter Brian Crane (17 points) topped 11 Bulldogs in the scoring column and senior Nick Dame added 15 points. Senior Tyler Wadsworth (7 rebounds) led Kimberly's 33-13 edge on the boards.

Senior guard Jordan Doan matched his career best with 14 points plus 2 assists and a long 3-pointer at the final buzzer. Wood River (2-6, 1-3) posted its season high with 47 points, but lost its third straight game.

Others were Quentin Dowdle (10 points, 4 rebounds), Alex Padilla (7 points), Keven Abbott (6 points, 4 rebounds) and Kevin Jensen (4 points). Scoring two points apiece were Stone Sutton (3 assists), Juan Martinez and Ryan Dean.

Wood River visited #5-ranked Jerome (7-3, 2-0) Tuesday night and goes to Filer (6-2) on Friday. Rounding out the rest of the Great Basin are #1 Twin Falls (9-1, 3-0), Minico (6-3, 2-0), Burley (4-7, 1-2) and Canyon Ridge (1-8. 0-4). Burley visits Hailey on Jan. 20.
