Strong start to 2010 for WRHS matmen

Sweep dual meets in Pocatello

Spending six hours on a bus and two productive dual meets on the mat Tuesday night wasn't a bad way at all for the Wood River High School wrestling team to start out 2010.

First-year coach Shawn Huntington's Wolverines dispatched host Century of Pocatello 52-27 and also beat the Kimberly Bulldogs 43-28 in the triangular meet in the Gate City. They were the first team wins of the season for Hailey.

Against Century, Wood River accepted six forfeit victories while giving up only two weight classes to forfeits. There were two pins, by Tanner Orchard at 152 pounds and Tyler Jaramillo at 171. Tim Boyle captured a 15-2 decision at 119.

Compared to the Century dual meet, where only six of the 14 weight classes were contested, the Wood River-Kimberly dual was a lively competition with 11 of the 14 classes having matches. Wood River won four pins, two forfeits and two decisions to beat Kimberly by 15 points.

Winning by pin were Boyle at 119, Zach Brown at 130, Tommy Bailey at 135 and Kasey Barker at 189. Hailey winners by decision were Nick Chase 13-2 at 145 and Orchard by a 7-2 score at 152. Jared Anderson took a junior varsity match with a first-round pin at 103.

Wood River's varsity competes in the Buhl Tournament today, Friday and Saturday, Jan. 8-9 and then hosts its first home meet of the season on Wednesday, Jan. 13 with visiting teams from Wendell and Filer, in Hailey. The Wolverine JV is entered in the Canyon Ridge tournament this weekend in Twin Falls.
