Fiesta!

By CHRIS MILLSPAUGH

What a great way to really start the new year—an Idaho sports team in the national spotlight. I, like many other locals, tuned in to witness the undefeated Boise State Broncos take on the undefeated TCU Horned Frogs. I'm not an expert on wildlife, but I could imagine that a wild bronco could kick the be-jesus out of a lowly horned frog. Am I right?

Well, they did it, didn't they ? They beat No. 4 ranked TCU 17-10 to cap off a 14 and 0 season—only the second college team in history to win that many games in one season. So, what's next? They could very well win the national championship next year. They lost only three seniors from the squad. Their recruitment program should attract the top athletes in the country to play for the powerhouse football team in the obscure state of Idaho. Suddenly the sports world has turned its eyes on our modest little home. The whole world is watching. Now they've done it.

Idaho is now the place to be. Hold on, everybody, a whole hoard of folks will soon be invading our area to claim the magic. Clearly, we are doomed. The levees have broken. A grand collection of underdogs hoping for a second chance in life are headed our way. Underdogs aren't rich folks. Why, they've been struggling for years, looking for an opportunity to cash in and they smell a winner.

Soon, every burg in Idaho will double in size and population. There's hope in them thar hills! This is going to make the gold rush of 1849 look like a slow boat to China. There'll be a chicken in every pot. There'll be pot in every chicken. Urban America is on the move to the land of Simplot. Boise, the city of trees, is destined to become the rainforest. Tear up the Mayan calendar, the future is now. It's California time in the Northwest. It's "fiesta time!" Lord have mercy on our souls. They're coming—with all their hopes and dreams and problems. What price glory?

Montana, anyone?

Nice talking to you ...
