There’s other senior housing

There have been several articles and columns recently about the lack of affordable senior housing in Blaine County. None of the articles have recognized an existing, federally funded, housing resource in Hailey. Summit Apartments comprises 40 units of one-bedroom apartments available to seniors age 62 or older or disabled individuals regardless of age. This housing resource is funded by USDA Rural Development.

The rent rates are based on the income of eligible residents. This resource is funded by the federal government and is owned by a not-for-profit organization. Summit Apartments are fully accessible, modern, safe, and decent. Our only limitation to housing individuals who meet the age or disability requirements is that those whose income exceeds the area moderate income, as defined by USDA, are not eligible.

It is not an extended care facility, or an assisted-living facility, but it is a wonderful resource for independent adults. The recent column from the county commissioners failed to recognize the existence of Summit Apartments when asking the citizens for their financial support of a new facility.
