Sun Valley rose to occasion

The efficiency and grace with which the 15-hour power outage was handled at the Sun Valley Resort was beyond amazing. All of our wants or needs were taken care of immediately, all beginning at 4 a.m. in the Lodge lobby. The power outage had begun at 10:30 p.m., so later we began to converge in the lobby to escape our rooms, too cold and dark to inhabit. In short order, we were all given coffee and tea before the roaring lobby fireplace.

Shortly after that, a delightful buffet breakfast materialized in Gretchen's (and, I assume, also in the Inn). How the staff managed to improvise that is a mystery. That complimentary meal even included scrambled eggs and oatmeal, etc., all by candlelight.

As the sun came up Christmas morning, there was a definite sense of camaraderie among all of us guests. We were, of course, unaware of the exhausted, hard-working and frustrated managers and staff who had been up all night. I understand that a number of staff workers simply volunteered to arrive to help ease the situation.

Later, the complimentary luncheon was just as efficient and delicious as breakfast had been.

All of the managers, who keep the resort running, are certainly to be complimented. Their graceful managing of that untimely nightmare was astonishing—a Christmas none of us will ever forget!
