Photographer David Stoecklein has produced two new books this year, "Photographing the West" and "Windmills of the West: Rural America's Most Important Invention." Over the past 30 years, Stoecklein has produced many photography books. Though he is based in Ketchum, he sells his books and photographs throughout the country.

"There is no place like Sun Valley," Stoecklein said. "It's great people and a wonderful environment."

"Windmills of the West" was an idea from one of Stoecklein's business associates and expresses the idea of windmill as an iconic feature of the Western landscape. For ranchers and farmers who had to struggle to pump water manually from the ground, the windmill provided an abundance of water.

"Most of my really good ideas come from friends and business associates," Stoecklein said. "The West is changing, but I pursue the West as it is."

Stoecklein's new book, "Photographing the West," is filled with over 200 photographs celebrating the American West. Stoecklein has received the award for Best Living Photographer of the West for three years by True West magazine.

Stoecklein said he started photographing in black and white and now it's all about digital work. He will be holding photography workshops at his ranch in Mackay to help participants fulfill their love of photography and advance into the digital age.

The workshops will be held in Feb. 5-8, May 21-24, July 30 to Aug. 3 and Sept. 24-27. For details, call 726-5191, ext. 4.
