Wolves could be a gold mine


In her recent opinion piece, Ann Hill put forth several interesting ideas. I am following up on one of these.

Ann mentions that communities around Yellowstone are making about $3 million each year from wolf watching. Here is a quote from a Dec. 15, 2009, article in USA Today about wolves in Yellowstone: "The wolves have fueled a $35 million-a-year industry as cars full of tourists spend dawn to dusk looking for wolves and trading tales."

Thirty-five million dollars is a big chunk of change. Just think of what a small portion of that figure could do to help struggling restaurants, bars, lodging and other small businesses in Challis and Stanley. Perhaps we should reconsider killing a potential gold mine.
