Call to artists

Local and returning artists are encouraged to apply for the 2010 Sun Valley Center Arts & Crafts Festival, to be held Aug. 13--15 in Ketchum. Applications are available online at zapplication.org or sunvalleycenter.org. Applications for the festival are due by midnight Sunday, Feb. 28.

The festival celebrates 42 years and ranks as one of the top 100 outdoor juried festivals in the nation. More than 8,000 people attended the festival last year in Atkinson Park.

The Center will offer tutorials for local artists to help them with the online application process. To schedule an appointment, call Sarah Kolash at 726-9491, ext. 21 or e-mail skolash@sunvalleycenter.org.

James O'Dea to visit YMCA

James O'Dea is former president of noetic sciences and former executive director of Seva. He will be in Ketchum on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 9-10, as a guest speaker to launch Valerie Skonie's, "A Winter Feast for the Soul," a worldwide 40-day period of spiritual practice.

O'Dea will give a presentation, "Meet Your Greatest Teacher: Stress and the Path to Your Highest Self" on Saturday, Jan. 9, from 6:30-8 p.m. Tickets are $15. In addition, he will give a workshop, "Luminous Wisdom: Distinguishing Authentic Guidance From Ego's Fantasies," on Sunday, Jan. 10, from 1-4 p.m. Tickets are $25. All tickets are available at the Wood River YMCA in Ketchum.

Second City celebrates 50 years

Company of Fools will present Chicago's legendary comedy theater company The Second City, presenting its 50th Anniversary Show on Thursday, Jan. 14, and Friday, Jan. 15, at 7 p.m. at the Liberty Theatre in Hailey.

The Second City features the next generation of comic greats performing a diverse array of sketches and songs, as well as off-the-cuff improvisation that can provide completely unexpected comic brilliance. From the battle of the sexes to the battles at the voting booth, The Second City provides a hilarious and insightful look into contemporary American culture.

Sun Valley Opera honors Alyson Cambridge

Metropolitan soprano Alyson Cambridge has been awarded Sun Valley Opera Artist of the Year 2009. The award salutes a new artist who has displayed outstanding career advancement.

Cambridge will perform two concerts at 6:30 and 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 29, at the Sun Valley Club for an opening night concert and diva party benefit for the Sun Valley Opera. Tickets begin at $125.

Cambridge will also perform Saturday, Jan. 30, at 8 p.m. at Carol's Dollar Mountain Lodge. Doors open at 7:15 p.m. Tickets are $35 general admission and $75 preferred seating. For details, visit sunvalley.com.
