Palmers lead SVSEF charge at Hays races

Podiums on Payday at Park City

Bergen Palmer, 17, and his younger sister Teagen Palmer, 15, of Ketchum led Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation (SVSEF) alpine racers at the Eric Hays Memorial Open Series of technical races Dec. 19-22 at Park City (Utah) Resort.

First-year J1 (ages 17-19) Bergen Palmer podiumed in his class with a third place in Saturday's two-run slalom on Payday ski run. He was seventh overall of 125 two-run finishers, just 1.59 seconds off Coley Oliver's top time for Park City.

It was a good weekend for the kids of 1972 Winter Olympic slalom star and former professional ski racer Terry Palmer, 57, the U.S. Ski Team star turner from New England.

Teagen Palmer, a first-year J2 (15-16), grabbed the slalom silver medal in her class Sunday and was fifth overall of 82 finishers just .91 seconds behind the top time of Park City's 19-year-old Jaime Dupratt.

Meanwhile, Tanner Farrow, 16, captured second place in Sunday's J2 boys' slalom, in 12th place overall of 109 finishers. In J3 (ages 13-14), Kipling Weisel and K.J. Savaria had third-place slalom class results. Also in the top five of their classes were Ben Kanellitsas and Sofia DeWolfe.

Tuesday's giant slalom finale at Park City finished after press deadline. Those results will be reported in a forthcoming Express issue.

There were 142 boys and 98 girls mainly from Utah, Wyoming and Idaho in the four-day tech series presented by the Park City Ski Team. The SVSEF sent a team of 32 racers to the Eric Hays.
