Fair trials are American way

Kudos to Pat Murphy for pointing out that a fair trial for an accused terrorist is not a threat to democracy. As an immigrant and a student of constitutional law (it's what to love about America the most), I have been greatly disappointed by the Patriot Act, the ridiculous expansion of the terrorist watch list and the goings-on at Guantanamo. If we forget who we are when the chips are down, if we suddenly don't trust our legal system, if we deny the many innocent a right to redress of grievances, if we swell the ranks of the accused and declare no one exonerated, then we render the Constitution null and void.

I am also disappointed that the Obama administration has never addressed the illegal excesses of the previous administration, especially as they relate to the abuse of executive privilege. The Fourth, Fifth, Eighth and 14th amendments have taken a beating during the last decade, and lie in tatters. The repair of our ethical infrastructure is as vital as that of our roads and bridges. A great country like ours can tako a punch in the nose and in the solar plexus and not have it slow us down. No amount of terrorism can destroy our freedoms. Only we can do that.
