Wolf policy is a failure

I'm writing in response to the Dec. 16 editorial that supported the aerial gunning of wolves to subsidize public-lands ranching.

Public-land ranchers pay a miniscule $1.35 per month to graze a cow and a calf, or 27 cents per month for each sheep, on our public lands. The market rate in Idaho for grazing is $18 to $24 per month per cow, about 15 times the subsidized public land rate.

Despite these remarkable taxpayer subsidies, the Forest Service, the BLM, and the Idaho Department of Fish & Game do not require ranchers to take necessary measures to prevent conflict with wolves or other native predators, i.e. ranchers do not need to protect their own livestock because the government will pay to kill wolves and other native predators.

Western Watersheds Project believes wildlife is much more valuable than coddling welfare ranchers.
