Basketball night in Carey matches Panthers, Mushers

Northside boys’, girls’ games won by Carey

On a bitterly cold December evening, basketball teams from Carey School and Camas County High School of Fairfield came indoors for a pair of Northside Conference varsity games Tuesday in Carey.

Carey's teams won both league contests—the Panther girls breaking free of a tight game in the second half for a 55-29 victory, and the deep Carey boys jumping ahead from the get-go for a 52-28 triumph.

Senior guard Jessica Parke (19.8 ppg) notched her fourth straight 20-plus scoring effort with a season-best 24 points in 24 minutes. Parke (4 assists, 4 steals) led a Panther effort that outdistanced Camas 18-8 in steals, 26-6 in points in the paint and 11-1 in bench points.

It was 16-13 in Carey's favor at half, but coach Lane Durtschi's Panthers seized control of the game with a 21-8 third-quarter advantage

Carey (5-1, 2-0 league) shot well, 39% from the field compared to 19% for the Mushers (3-3, 1-2). They didn't score much, but Micaela Adamson (4 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals) and Amy Ellsworth (2 points, 8 boards, 3 steals) were factors.

Other Carey contributors were Angela Ellsworth (10 points, two 3-pointers, 4 steals), Jaide Parke (9 points, 4 steals), Nicky Gomez (5 points, 4 boards) and Candace Hennefer (1 point, 3 rebounds). Katelyn Peterson and Sunnie Vouch scored 8 points apiece for Camas County.

Ten Carey boys made the scoring column in Tuesday's 24-point victory over the Mushers. Coach Dick Simpson's Panthers (3-0, 2-0) stayed unbeaten in league play with the big contest against Richfield (3-0, 2-0) looming in Carey Dec. 18.

Carey (37% field goal shooting) out-rebounded Camas 42-27 led by senior Wacey Barg (4 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals).

Panther senior guard Brett Adamson (15.7 ppg) finished with 11 points. Fellow senior Dillon Simpson (9 points, two 3-pointers, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks, 3 steals) was the next highest scorer for Carey.

Other Panther contributors included Tyler Chavez (6 points, 4 rebounds), Blair Peck (7 points, 3 boards, 3 steals), Trevor Peck (6 points) and Shane Bingham (4 points, 5 boards). Camas scorers included Derek Walker 9 points and Carlos Robles 8.

The Carey teams visited 2A Butte County in Arco Thursday night then will wait a week until hosting Richfield for what should be a great night of basketball on Friday, Dec. 18.
