Picabo resident Nick Purdy has received an award from the National Weather Service for his volunteer efforts recording weather information.
According to a newss release from the National Weather Service, Purdy has participated in the agency's Cooperative Weather Observations Program for 40 years. On Nov. 30, he received the Cooperative Weather Observer Length of Service Award.
The observations that Purdy recorded have been used in climatic information for the state and the nation.
In southern Idaho and northern Utah, nearly 70 volunteer weather observers help the National Weather Service predict long-term climate trends. At the end of each month, volunteers like Purdy transmit records to the National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C. The records are later published in "Climatological Data" or "Hourly Precipitation Data."
The National Weather Service stated that the Cooperative Weather Observations Program is the most definitive source for national climate trends for precipitation and temperature.
Along with a certificate, Purdy received a lapel pin to remember the occasion.
