Suns hockey debuts against Park City

Two games this weekend

Sun Valley Suns men's ice hockey is back at Sun Valley Skating Center this weekend. The team's 35th winter season debuts with the visit of the Park City (Utah) Silver Kings.

Game times are Friday and Saturday, Dec. 11-12 at 7 p.m. General admission tickets will cost $8, same as last year.

Many of the Suns skaters will return from last winter's 9-11-0 season including veteran forwards Vilnis Nikolaisons, Jamie Ellison, Ryan Enrico, Charles Friedman, Jon Duval, Blake Jenson and Cody Proctor. Defenders back are Ivars Muzis, Eric Demment and captain Chris Warrington.

And the returning goalies are Ryan Thomson and Mat Gershater.

Each weekend from Dec. 11-March 6 features Suns games with the exception of Jan. 29-30, when the rink is closed, and Feb. 5-6, when the annual Boulder Mountain Ski Tour is held. Here is the Suns schedule at Sun Valley Skating Center, with games starting at 7 p.m.:

Dec. 11-12 vs. Park City. Dec. 18-19 vs. Utah All-Stars. Dec. 26 vs. Suns Alumni (exhibition). Dec. 30 vs. Suns Futures (exhibition).

Jan. 1-2 vs. McCall. Jan. 8-9 vs. Cache Valley Trappers. Jan. 15-16 vs. Vancouver (B.C., Canada). Jan. 22-23 vs. Boston (Bobby Farrelly's Gutter Snipes). Feb. 12-13 vs. Missoula (Mt.). Feb. 19-20 vs. University of Idaho. Feb. 26-27 vs. Bozeman (Mt.). March 5-6 vs. Seattle (Wash.).

The Suns have played 804 games over 34 seasons, with a 555-220-29 overall record.

Benefit nights to continue

The Suns Foundation, Inc. is continuing its longstanding tradition of holding fundraising nights for non-profit organizations during Saturday night Suns games in 2009-10.

Suns Foundation Board of Directors members David Hutchinson, Davis Love III, Glenn Hunter, George Gund III and John Miller have announced a list of the initial groups selected for the 2009-2010 season. In no particular order, they are:

Sun Valley Youth Hockey- Scholarship Fund/Brett Sammis Scholarship; Park Penguins/City of Ketchum; Girls on the Run; Hailey Ice; Camp Rainbow Gold; Wood River Baseball and Softball Association; Sawtooth United (SUFC) youth soccer; Sawtooth Pony Club; Sun Valley Adaptive Sports; and The Sun Valley Ballet School.

The board is considering adding additional nights (some Friday game nights) as the season progresses based on fund raising, according to a statement from the board.

Grumpy's knocks out of unbeaten box

The Senior Hockey League standings tightened up Monday nigh—three teams now tied with 2-1 records with only Morgan's Fine Finishes lurking in the bushes and still seeking its first win of the season.

Grumpy's/SV Auto Club knocked out of the unbeaten ranks with a dominating third period effort in a 6-2 triumph.

The game was tied 2-2 entering the final stanza. Rod Watson and Frank Salvoni each scored twice for the winners, while Bryan Speth (1 assist) and Cody Proctor (2 assists) chipped in with singles. John McGuone added an assist. scorers were Ryan Enrico and Eric Wingard.

Yoga College improved to 2-1 with a 5-2 victory over Morgan's in Monday's other action. Don Saver, Jon Duval, Peter Whitehead (2 goals) and Sean Buckley scored for the winners. For Morgan's, it was Dale Johnson and Blake King.

Coming: On Monday, Dec. 14, the game schedule is Yoga College (2-1, 12 goals scored/7 against) vs. (2-1, 9/10) at 8:20 p.m. followed by Grumpy's/SV Auto Club (2-1, 13/10) vs. Morgan's Fine Finishes (0-3, 7/14) at 9:30 p.m.
