Having been warned that I might be attending a "Republican Men's Club" function, I nevertheless decided to venture forth and see the movie "33 Minutes." Before leaving home, I told my family I wouldn't be long, thinking the film's title had something to do with its length.
After having sat through a rehash of dire warnings of paranoid retired military officers and politicians, including Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan, of the destruction of the Free World by the bad guys, I only wished it was 33 minutes long. Amid comments of "very boring," "bizzare," "insane" from other viewers on leaving the theater, I could only think of President Dwight Eisenhower's warning to the American people on leaving office in 1961. It might surprise many to hear this from a general and hero of World War II, but he knew what and whom we should fear: the military-industrial complex.
Eisenhower said in his speech, "In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist."
I urge everyone to read his speech in its entirety. It is readily available online.
