Sports summary

Wilma gives it her best press, 181 pounds

Bellevue's Wilma Cadavona, 57, has been powerlifting for 14 years and she's still making progress with the barbells.

Three times in the toughest competition, Cadavona made lifts of 170, 176 and 181 pounds to break her own Idaho state record in the women's bench press. Action took place during the WABDL World Championships Oct. 27-Nov. 1 at the Pepper Mill Hotel in Reno, Nevada.

Cadavona, a 20-year Wood River Valley resident originally from Kauai, set her records in the Masters 54-60 division in the 181-pound weight class. She has dropped down from the 198-pound weight class in which she qualified for WABDL Worlds last June at Portland, Ore.

And she said she feels stronger after losing the weight. Said the four-year SkyWest Airlines employee, "I lifted 170.7 pounds on my first attempt, 176.2 on my second and 181.7 on my third and final attempt to set a personal-best bench press. My goal eventually is to lift 200 pounds."

Cadavona, a three-time Idaho state champion who first competed at the age of 46, said her next goal is next spring at the Snake River Powerlifting Championships in Idaho Falls. She said, "I'll see where I'm at then in the bench press."

She trains at Blaine County Fitness Center in Hailey.
