Sun Valley captures holiday spirits

Sun Valley Resort will begin celebrating the Christmas season with a tree-lighting festival on Saturday, Dec. 19, at 5 p.m. Enjoy Christmas songs by the Sun Valley Carolers, free hot chocolate and cookies as well as a visit from Santa Claus.

Sun Valley will also present a Sun Valley Classical Christmas Concert on Wednesday, Dec. 23, at 7 p.m. in the Sun Valley Opera House. Tickets are $35.

A Christmas Eve Festival in Sun Valley will take place Thursday, Dec. 24, with the Sun Valley Carolers, the Nutcracker on Ice, torchlight parade and fireworks. Events begin at 5 p.m. For details, call 622-2135.

Sun Valley Nordic Festival debuts

The first Sun Valley Nordic Festival will take place Saturday, Jan. 30, through Monday, Feb. 8. Ten days of events and activities include clinics, races, special trail pass rates and demos. Festival highlights include Ski the Rails, which offers free skiing on the Wood River Trails on Saturday, Jan. 30.

The week's most important event, the Boulder Mountain Tour, will take place on Saturday, Feb. 6, at 10 a.m. The 35th annual 32k race begins in Senate Meadows near Galena Lodge. For details, visit svnordicfestival.com.

Enjoy the Best of Banff

The 10th annual Best of Banff Mountain Film Festival will take place at the nexStage Theatre in Ketchum at 7 p.m. each night Thursday, Feb. 4, through Saturday, Feb. 6. Enjoy award-winning films on mountain sport and support the Friends of the Sawtooth National Forest Avalanche Center's annual fundraising event. Tickets are $15. For details, call 622-0095.

Marley in the Mountains continues

The second annual Marley in the Mountains will take place Friday, Feb. 26, and Saturday, Feb. 27, with lectures, movies, reggae concerts and First Ascent's "Up Down, Get Down" randonee race on Baldy. For details, visit marleyinthemountains.com.

Snowbox Derby is a winter favorite

The annual Snowbox Derby will take place on Sunday, Feb. 28, at Rotarun ski area in Croy Canyon east of Hailey. The race is open to five-year old kids and up. Blaine County Recreation District sponsors the event. For details, call 788- 2117.

All kids win at the Kindercup Ski Race

The annual Papoose Club's Kindercup Ski Race for children ages 3 to 17 will take place on Saturday, Feb. 27. The event dates from the mid-1950s. All participants receive a patch and winners receive a medal. For details, call 726-6642.

Janss Pro Am is ski and social fun

The annual Janss Pro Am Classic will take place Thursday, March 4, through Saturday, March 6. The event supports the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation and features costume races on Baldy. For details, visit svsef.org.

Celebrate the Paw 'n' Pole

The 25th silver anniversary of the annual Paw 'n' Pole race, which benefits the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, will take place Sunday, March 7. The cross-country and snowshoe race features adults and children in competition with their dogs and the dogs for adoption from the shelter. For details, visit animalshelterwrv.org.

Expedition Inspiration helps fight cancer

The fifth annual Expedition Inspiration Twilight Snowshoe event will take place Friday, March 19. The annual event is a breast cancer research fundraiser and will take place at the Valley Club in Hailey at 5:30 p.m. For details, call 726-6456.
