Let’s salute Doran Key

The 33rd annual Fall Game Dinner was a huge success, and the highlight for me was beyond the incredible generosity of the people of this community. The essence of what the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation exemplifies to me was the awarding of the Jack Simpson Dedicated Coach Award to Doran Key.

She has been involved with the foundation longer than anyone else, beginning with her three years as a teenager with Jack Simpson as her coach. She has been the Development Team head coach for 25 years and has touched the lives of thousands of children. In my opinion, she is the linchpin, introducing children to the joy of skiing and racing, starting them on a golden journey that has led some of them all the way to the Olympics.

But most impressive to me is that she never forgets a face or a name, or the special attributes that each of them possesses.

I feel very honored to include myself as one of her coaches who helps nurture those young children into true mountain people. Everyone in life should have a boss like Doran.

I realize it is a huge challenge to budget for the ski team in these trying times. I just hope that it is a small minority of children who don't get to experience the true magic of Doran Key. I hope that we get to share her special gift for another 25 years. She rocks!

Bring on winter!
