Trailing for most of the game, the Carey Panthers came alive when they needed to most—in the fourth quarter—in a girls' basketball road game against Oakley Tuesday.
Carey outscored Oakley 19-11 in the fourth and out-rebounded the Hornets 38-26.
"With 13 seconds to go, they (Oakley) hit a 3 and tied the game 44-all," Carey coach Lane Durtschi said. "We'd been struggling all night, but the girls finally did what I asked them to do, went down, and Nicky Gomez sunk a lay-up with a few seconds to go."
The bucket nailed down a 46-44 victory in the opening game of the season for the young Panthers, who received some serious senior leadership from high-scorer Jessica Parke.
Parke, a 5-5 guard, pocketed 18 points with 10 of them coming in Carey's 19-point fourth quarter. Parke also recorded an amazing 14 steals and 8 rebounds.
"We had to fight pretty hard for that W," Durtschi said. "We had a lot of girls out sick or playing sick. Nicky was feeling pretty bad, but she fought through it."
Micaela Adamson contributed 9 points and 6 boards. Jaide Parke tallied 6 points and 8 rebounds. Angela Ellsworth scored 6 points, Gomez 4, Darby Northcott 2, and Shurressa Rodriguez 1.
Carey (1-0) traveled to Hagerman last night and returns to the court on Thursday, Dec. 3 against league-rival Bliss.
