FAA team to discuss runway operations

The Runway Safety Action Team of the Federal Aviation Administration will hold a meeting today, Nov. 18, at 9 a.m. at Friedman Memorial Airport to evaluate the field's runway operations. Pilots and others are invited to attend and contribute concerns and observations.

The session will be in the Friedman training room adjoining the airport manager's office.

Manager Rick Baird characterized the session as a routine evaluation that all airports go through periodically. In recent years, unauthorized incursions on active runways by taxiing aircraft have been a major problem at some major metropolitan airports.

Friedman's runway is subject to special operations by the airport control tower because of the field's design deficiencies for larger aircraft. When so-called C-III category aircraft, such as Horizon Air's Q400 turboprop and large corporate jets, are landing or taking off, all aircraft movements on the field are halted. This is called "sanitizing" the airport.

This is the result of the runway and taxiways being too close together. C-III aircraft have faster landing speeds and larger-width wingspreads.
