Play reading goes sci-fi

‘A Number’ focuses on cloning

Ever wonder what the future might be like if humans were cloned? If so, attend the play reading of "A Number" by Caryl Churchill. The nexStage Theatre will present the second reading in its series on Friday, Nov. 20, at 6:30 p.m.

The readings take place at the nexStage Theater in Ketchum, are free and include complimentary wine and cookies.

"A Number" will be read by Chad Smith and Scott Creighton and directed by Jon Kane. The play is set in the future and it's about a father and son, but the son has three clones.

"The playwright Sam Shepard performed in a production of the play in New York City and said it was the most important play since Beckett's 'Waiting for Godot,'" Kane said. "It was the first time he had been on stage in 30 years."

Kane said it is a difficult piece, but that is part of the play-reading series' ethos. He said that even though these are not full-blown productions, nexStage can push its performance boundaries through readings.

"We are trying to do more interesting works," Kane said. "Churchill is considered by many to be England's greatest living playwright and famous for 'Top Girls' and 'Cloud Nine.'"

The play's themes touch upon nature versus nurture as well as father-son relationships.

"It's worth hearing out loud," Kane said. "Especially with two of the best actors in the valley."

The show's running time is about an hour. For details, call 726-9124.
