Caulkins just did it

Wood River senior Chase Caulkins shrugged off frigid temperatures Saturday to place fifth in the Nike Cross Regionals at Eagle Island State Park in Boise. In a field of 197 runners, Caulkins turned in a personal best 15:57 over the 3.1 mile course to qualify for Nike Nationals in Portland, Ore., on Dec. 5. He will run on Nike Team Northwest with four other boys who placed in the top seven. Spokane's Ben Williams won the championship division in 15:29.

Wood River coach Patty Brothwell had three groups of runners, varsity boys comprised of James Paris, Andrew Pfeiffer, Connor Hesselbacher, and Zeb Glenn, jayvee runner Ben Stout, and varsity girls Corrine Smith, Dani McLaughlin, and Alison Town.

Paris and Pfeiffer both cracked the 18-minute mark to place 41st and 62nd respectively. Stout ran to 28th in the jayvee boys' race in 18:50. Smith was the 41st girl to cross the line in the open class. McLaughlin was 80th and Town 82nd.
