Wolverine girls out of the gate with a win

Quick start makes fast work of Buhl

When you haven't won your season-opening game in three years, what better night to smash a hex than Friday the 13th?

Luck—good or bad—had nothing to do with the Wood River girls' basketball team's 50-24 victory over the Buhl Indians. The Wolverines got off to a fast start with an 18-point first quarter and pushed the throttle wide open, posting quarters of 18-14-10-8, while allowing Buhl fewer than 8 points per frame.

"I think it's similar to what we are looking to do this season," coach Mendy Benson said. "Press a little bit, look to fast break, create turnovers and run the floor.

"We are not used to playing up by 20. When they were up, they let up a little. We need to learn to keep playing hard no matter what the score is."

Stepping on the gas for the Wolverines was sophomore point guard K.T. Martinez with 15 points. Senior post Monica Garceau added 11 points, followed by Grace Lagodich 8, Haylee Thompson 4, Tristan Bowers 3, Kelly Chapman 3, Alex Lindbloom 2, Jade Glenn 2, Cheyanne Swanson 2.

"We are much improved from last year," Benson said. "In terms of our confidence and we are a little more athletic at every position. The girls did a good job of getting stronger over the summer."

High-point girl for Buhl was Bailee Montgomery with 7 points.

Wood River (1-0) played Wendell last night, and will host Filer in their home opener, tomorrow, Thursday, Nov. 19.
