Learn about heart-healthy nutrition

Women (and men) can learn how to make heart-healthy nutrition delicious and easy at St. Luke's Center for Community Health's Brown Bag lecture on Thursday, Nov. 12.

By developing a healthy lifestyle, people can help prevent heart disease—the leading cause of death of American women.

St. Luke's registered dietitian Becky McCarver will present the lecture from 12:15-1:15 p.m. in St. Luke's Baldy Conference Rooms.

Trailing of the Sheep seeking new board members

The Trailing of the Sheep Cultural Heritage Center is seeking new volunteer board members for the nonprofit organization.

The primary activity of the center and board members is the Trailing of the Sheep Festival, held each October. The group also works with schools and other institutions on education and cultural programs.

Board members are elected for three-year terms and are expected to attend regular board meetings and make decisions regarding staffing, budgeting and other issues. Board members are also required to participate on one of the standing committees and to work with staff and volunteers to organize and execute the three-day festival.

Nordic waxing clinics offered

The Blaine County Recreation District and TOKO will hold free Nordic waxing clinics on Tuesday, Nov. 17, and Tuesday, Dec. 1, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Art Room of the Community Campus in Hailey.

Participants should bring their skis (and any additional waxing equipment) for these hands-on clinics. EJ Harpham, Muffy Ritz and Jim Santa will offer expertise on the best waxing techniques.

Even for those who are not race-orientated, having the proper wax can help their skis glide more easily and keep the bases in good shape.

Discounts will be available for waxing packages and more.

Presentation on early-childhood issues

The Wood River Community YMCA will present a live broadcast of a conference on building early childhood empathy and resilience on Friday, Nov. 13, from 6:15 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The virtual conference will feature Dr. Robert Brooks, a leading voice in resilience and self-esteem research, and Dr. Ron Taffel, a noted child and family therapist. Other topics being discussed include appropriate emotional expression, creating a caring classroom, dealing with anxious children and parents, and bullying and social conflicts.

The Blaine County School District is hosting the one-day conference at the YMCA.

Do you Facebook?

Duke Computer Solutions and the Sun Valley-Ketchum Chamber & Visitors Bureau will hold a free one-hour "Lunch & Learn-Social Networking" workshop focusing on Facebook on Thursday, Nov. 19.

The workshop will help participants create Facebook profiles and groups. Two free specialized seminars will be held Wednesday, Nov. 18. At noon, the focus will be on the arts community, and the 2 p.m. session will focus on lodging.

An open session Thursday at noon will be based on the interests of the participants.

The workshops will be held at the visitor center's conference room at 491 Sun Valley Road in Ketchum.

Call for artists

NexStage Theatre in Ketchum is asking local artists to make ordinary chairs into one-of-a-kind works for the "nexStage Chair-ity Auction." A reception for the chairs and artists' will take place Wednesday, Dec. 9, at the nexStage Theatre.

A silent auction to bid on the chairs will begin at the reception and continue through Saturday, Dec. 19. Winning bids will be announced at the theater on Saturday, Dec. 19. Funds raised from the auction will support the nexStage Theatre's Performing Arts Annual Fund.

WRMS to hold parent night

A "Parent 2 Parent" meeting on Thursday, Nov. 12, will discuss social issues facing middle school students, as well as connect parents together.

Get 'Santa Paws' photos

Need a photo of yourself with your dog or cat for the holidays?

The Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley will sponsor its annual Santa Paws photos on Saturday, Nov. 21, from noon to 3 p.m. at Burnsie's in Ketchum, and on Sunday, Nov. 22, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Dirty Beagle in Hailey.

Photographers Val Seamons in Ketchum and Jack Flolo in Hailey have volunteered their time, and all profits will go to benefit the shelter. The cost is $20 for two 5-by-7-inch prints and four 4-by-6-inch prints. Additional prints and Christmas cards may be ordered.

Burnsies is at 631 Second St. in the Walnut Avenue Mall and the Dirty Beagle is at 810 S. Main St.

The Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley was the first "no-kill" shelter in Idaho. More than 90 percent of its funding comes from private donations.

Additional information on the Santa Paws program can be obtained by calling Andrea Parker at the Barkin' Basement, the Hailey thrift store that benefits the shelter, at 788-3854.

Victory Gardeners to meet

Valley Victory Gardeners will discuss garden preparation and fall planting on Thursday, Nov. 19, at 6:30 p.m. at the Hailey City Hall meeting room.

In addition, the meeting will include future planning for the Valley Victory Gardeners. For details, call 788-3876.

Check your car seat

St. Luke's Wood River Medical Center will hold a free car-seat safety check on Wednesday, Nov. 18, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

A certified child passenger safety technician will help participants install a car seat before their baby is born, and can fit an older child to his or her seat, teach proper installation and check for recalls.

Inspections take place in front of the main entrance of the hospital.
