Wounded soldier has valley ties

Manning shot 6 times in Fort Hood rampage

One of the soldiers wounded in a shooting rampage last week at Fort Hood, Texas, is a Twin Falls native and has family in the Wood River Valley.

Staff Sgt. Shawn Manning was shot six times on Thursday, Nov. 5, in a shooting rampage at the military base that left 13 people dead and 29 injured.

"He is still hospitalized and is now in stable condition," Manning's family reported in a prepared statement. "The family appreciates all the thoughts and support of our communities."

The family further reported that Manning and his wife, Autumn, currently reside in Lacey, Wash. He was born in Twin Falls and attended school in Twin Falls and Jerome. Manning majored in psychology at Idaho State University.

According to the family, Manning's mother, Shari Taylor, has residences in Hailey and Twin Falls and his brother Bryan Manning lives in Hailey. His sister Kim and her husband, Eric Lott, live in Twin Falls.

The family reported that Shawn Manning joined the U.S. Army in 2000 and served tours of duty in Iraq in 2003 and 2006.

"He had been called back to active duty in October and was preparing for a third deployment," the family reported.

Manning currently serves with the Combat Stress Unit in the 467th Medical Detachment Unit.
