Heal from the cell out

Workshop focuses on biology and spirit connection

Joyce Hawkes is a healing facilitator who will present a workshop on cell-level healing in Ketchum.

Joyce Hawkes had been a research scientist for 15 years when a near-death experience motivated her to change her career and life. She decided to combine her science background with indigenous spiritual and healing traditions.

"I am a healing facilitator," Hawkes said. "It's arrogant for me to say I am a healer. The universe is the healer."

Hawkes was a guest speaker at the 2009 Sun Valley Wellness Festival and presented a talk on "Cell-Level Healing: Discovery at the Mind-Body Interface." Her talk was so successful that the festival organizers asked her to return to give a workshop.

Hawkes is a biophysicist and cell biologist by training. She completed her doctorate in biophysics at Pennsylvania State University and was a postdoctoral fellow with the National Institutes of Health before settling in Seattle to work in research for the National Marine Fisheries Research Center, part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. While there, she was honored with a National Achievement Award for her work.

She is a fellow in the American Association for the Advancement of Science and has earned an international reputation for her scientific contributions in the field of ultra-high-speed laser effects on cells, and the effects of environmental pollutants on cells. She has published 36 peer-reviewed scientific papers.

"I don't see the confluence of science and spirituality in conflict," Hawkes said. "They are very compatible. Science is the search for what is true and that is also true for spirituality."

Hawkes will explain how cells make up our bodies and affect the mind, as well as show the connections among cells, spirit and reducing stress.

Her book, "Cell-Level Healing: The Bridge from Soul to Cell," is an explanation of her arrival at her practice.

The workshop will take place Friday, Nov.13, through Sunday, Nov. 15 at the Kentwood Lodge in Ketchum. It will begin with an introductory class, "Cell-Level Healing," from 7:30-9 p.m.. The class is $20. Saturday will consist of two sessions, from 9:30 a.m. to noon and 2:30-5 p.m. Sunday will also consist of two sessions, from 9:30 a.m. to noon and 1:30-4 p.m. Each day is $125. All three events are $240.

"In 25 years of full-time practice, I have seen amazing miracles happen," Hawkes said.
