High school skaters go 3-1, make tourney semis

Last weekend at Boise’s Qwest Arena

Playing on the Qwest Arena sheet where the Idaho Steelheads play their games, the Sun Valley high school hockey team went 3-1 and made the semi-finals of last weekend's Qwest High School tourney in Boise.

Sun Valley won its first three games in the eight-team, three-day meet by scores of 4-0 over Mountain View of Meridian, 5-1 over Boise/Capital and 3-1 over Boise High School. In Sunday's semi-final contest, Mountain View defeated Sun Valley 4-3 in overtime.

For its four games, Sun Valley outscored its opponents 15-6 and out-shot them by a considerable margin, 117-50. The young Suns kept pressure off their first-year goalie Teagan Foster, who played well and even stopped a penalty shot.

Leading the Sun Valley scoring were Doug King (5 goals/1 assist), Latner Straley (3/1) and Tom Crosby (2/2). Coaching the team were Chris Benson, Tim Jeneson and Cody Lampl.

In Friday's opener, Crosby scored two goals with Cooper Hanley (1/4) chipping in two assists in the 4-0 victory over Mountain View. Sun Valley outshot Mountain View 23-6.

Friday night, the young Suns got goals from five different players in a 35-shot, 5-1 success over Boise/Capital. They were Jimmy Hague (1/1), Hanley, Straley, Ian Murphy (1/2) and Ricky Jeneson (1/0). Foster stopped 13 of 14 Boise shots.

Straley got the ball rolling Saturday morning with an early goal, from Tommy Heinrich (1/1), then King broke a 1-1 tie with two unanswered goals in Sun Valley's 3-1 victory over Boise High School. Foster faced 17 shots and Sun Valley had 27.

Earning the top seed from its group, Sun Valley was shocked by #4-seeded Mountain View 4-3 (OT) in Sunday's semis. Again, King scored twice and Hanley had a single, but the Mavericks got goals in each period including OT to prevail. The Suns out-shot them 32-13.

Other players were Charlie Evans (0/1), Davis Hague (0/1), Alexander MacMillan (0/2), Niels McMahon (0/2) and Zak Sjoberg. Also on the roster were Karel Kaiser, Peter MacMillan and Parker Morris.

The Sun Valley U-18 prep skaters will host Boise U-18 for two games Saturday, Nov. 14 at 10 a.m. and 2:40 p.m. at Sun Valley Skating Center. On Sunday, the local U-16 boys will go against the Boise U-16s for games at 10 a.m. and 2:10 p.m.
