WRHS girls’ soccer team gathers one final time

For 2009 awards banquet


First-year Wood River High School girls' varsity soccer coach Jenni Conrad and longtime JC coach Doug Stouffer saluted their 2009 teams Thursday during the annual team banquet at Rico's, Ketchum.

Wood River's varsity (16-4-1) won the school's sixth straight conference tournament title and made its 15th consecutive state tournament trip for Conrad and assistant coaches Kelley Sinnott and John Koth. The Wolverines outscored foes 102-28.

The JV also celebrated a successful campaign, going 11-2 and outscoring opponents 82-7.

Varsity awards were:

Voted Most Inspirational by her teammates was senior Maddie-Kate Currie (5 goals). Most Improved was sophomore back Lucy Paisley. The Stellar Defender Award went to junior stopper Taylor Hayes. And senior co-captain Ashley Hesteness (7 goals) accepted The Coaches Award.

"Back of the Net" award as the team's top scorer went to junior Tanner Dredge (33 goals). She scored at least one goal in 15 of the 19 games she played. Dredge (86 goals) also surpassed Kristi Toussaint (85) as the all-time leading Wood River scorer in 17 seasons of Wolverine girls' soccer action.

Special gifts were given to co-captains Hesteness and Kelly Chapman, and the other senior, Currie.

Top JV scorer was junior team captain Jessica Martens (21 goals). Next were junior Karlie Jeneson (12), sophomore Morgan Brimstein (11), freshman McKenna Chase (10) and sophomore Sheridan Velasquez (7).

Most Improved was freshman defender Gracie Eagan. Martens collected the Top Gun award, while junior Halsey Pierce was the team's Most Valuable Player.
