Girls' basketball jamboree next Tuesday in Hailey

Wood River High School's girls' basketball program will host a three-school pre-season jamboree of short practice games Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 6 p.m. in the Hailey high school gym. Visiting will be teams from Carey High School and Hagerman High School.

Carey's Simpson named Wendy's High School Heisman state finalist

Dillon Simpson, a senior at Carey High School and a three-sport athlete (football, basketball, track), has been named one of Idaho's top 20 scholar athletes in the 2009 Wendy's High School Heisman Award program. More than 50,000 seniors applied nationwide and from that group 10,848 school winners were named.

Hockey group sells holiday wreaths

The Sun Valley Youth Hockey Association is selling floral quality Christmas greens. The natural wreaths, door swags, and cedar garlands are available at wholesale prices. All proceeds go to the SVYHA general operating fund. Tuition rates have not increased in five years due to the success of the holiday wreath sales, according to fundraising committee member Kelly Martin.

Zeitgeist half marathon is Saturday in Boise

The Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation is the benefit for the eighth annual Zeitgeist 13.1-mile Half Marathon run and walk Saturday, Nov. 7 in Boise. It starts at 10 a.m. at Optimist Football Park off Hill Road and finishes there. There are four hills and 1,250 feet of elevation gain and loss.

Fall Cyclocross Series

Road & Dirt's Billy Olson has announced details on his Web site about a Fall Cyclocross Series to be held Sunday mornings beginning Nov. 1 and running into early December.

Two venues are proposed—the Sagewillow Farms soccer fields in Elkhorn and The Community Campus, Hailey. Registration opens at 10 a.m. and closes at 10:50 a.m. each Sunday, with racing at 11 a.m. Cost is $15, licenses required. Call Olson at 788-9184 or email him at billy@roadanddirt.org.

"Freedom Riders" mountain bike film screened Thursday

Filmed in high definition in the Teton Mountains, the "Freedom Riders" movie about the evolution of U.S. mountain biking will be screened Thursday, Nov. 5 at 7:30 p.m. at Magic Lantern Cinema in Ketchum. Cost is $8 and there will be a raffle. Proceeds will benefit the International Mountain Bicyling Association (IMBA).

Directed by Chris Kitchen with an original score by Astral Kids, "Freedom Riders" recounts the history of trail building in this country—while being careful in its publicity to state Gravnetic and KGB Productions and its partners don't promote illegal trail building.

Centering its story on the Jackson Hole (Wyo.) area, "Freedom Riders" is the story of a small core group of riders who evolved from building rough and unsustainable trails to creating a precedent-setting relationship with the U.S. Forest Service. They went on to create some of the best freeride trails in the country
