Hannah Stauts, the youngest female mayor in U.S. history at the time of her election in November 2005, is opting not to seek re-election this fall, opening the door for a new mayor in Stanley.
Stanley City Clerk Erin Fisk said two candidates have stepped forward to contend for Stauts' seat—Herbert Mumford and Charlie Briggs.
Mumford, owner of the Valley Creek Motel & R.V. Park and Stanley City Council president, said in a press release that the city is in need of economic development. To that end, Mumford said, more slack and winter season activities are needed.
Briggs could not be contacted in time for this story.
In a news release, Stauts, 26, said the years she's spent as mayor have been rewarding and have been spent in a wonderful, close-knit community that sits in one of the most spectacular mountain valleys on the planet.
During her time in office, Stauts worked hard on salmon conservation, including a recent trip to Washington, D.C., to drum up support from Congress for the Salmon Solutions and Planning Act, a bill that would help break the gridlock on efforts to recover endangered stocks of Northwest salmon and steelhead.
In addition, she was busy with an array of tasks typical to running a city government and Stanley's proximity to public lands and varying wildlife issues.
