Hailey voters to decide on single council seat

Tony St. George challenges incumbent Martha Burke

In a bid for a single Hailey City Council seat, incumbent Martha (Beaver) Burke will square off against challenger Anthony (Tony) St. George for a four-year term.

Burke, a former Hailey planning and zoning commissioner, has positioned herself in interviews and debates as a defender of the "family-friendly" character of old Hailey. She has served four terms (16 years) on the City Council.

St. George is a newcomer to politics. He is a seven-year Hailey resident and a real estate agent with the Ketchum-based Rokan real estate investment firm. He has openly challenged the city's collection of development impact fees.

Councilman Don Keirn is running unopposed for his seat on the City Council.

Hailey voters will also decide on a ballot initiative to extend the term of the local-option tax for 20 years.

Proponents of the LOT say it is an important source of revenue for the city. Opponents say the LOT taxes locals who wine and dine at Hailey restaurants.

By state law, 60 percent of voters turning out will have to vote for the LOT initiative for it to succeed.

Polls are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at Hailey City Hall. Hailey residents can vote on an absentee ballot at Hailey City Hall through Nov. 2.
