Hailey plans new Woodside fire station

City awaits $1.3 million in stimulus funds to start project

During a meeting Monday, the Hailey City Council approved plans to put before the Hailey Planning and Zoning Commission for a new fire station in Woodside subdivision. The city is hoping to receive $1.3 million in federal stimulus funding to help pay for the $1.9 million facility, planned for the corner of Woodside Boulevard and Countryside Boulevard.

The city, which must obtain design review approval for the station before receiving federal funds, is scheduled to appear before the P&Z as an applicant on Monday, Nov. 2.

The 9,400-square-foot, concrete-block building will include two truck bays, a bunkhouse and a mezzanine for ladder duty practice.

City Administrator Heather Dawson said the federal stimulus money could be awarded any time before September 2010.

The city was given about an acre of property in Woodside 35 years ago for the purpose of providing fire protection for its south side.

Fire Chief Mike Chapman said last fall that the new station would improve the city's fire insurance rating, saving property owners a collective $1 million per year in insurance premiums.

Chapman's long-range plans call for building another station on the north side of the city and decommissioning the existing station on Third Street.
