Wood River High School senior Chase Caulkins will be running for his school's first individual state cross country championship in 27 years when the State 4A boys' 3.1-mile footrace is staged Saturday, Oct. 31 in northern Idaho.

Both Wood River boys' and girls' teams plus two Community School runners have qualified for Saturday's Idaho High School Activities Association-sponsored run at the Coeur d'Alene's Tribe's Circling Raven Golf Course in Worley, 25 miles south of Coeur d'Alene.

Caulkins, the top-ranked 4A boy according to Idahoxc.com, won last Wednesday's Great Basin Conference run on the flat College of Southern Idaho campus in Twin Falls.

He and the other local runners will see another generally flat challenge on the two-loop Circling Ravens course.

The 4A (schools with 640-1,279 student enrollments) girls start their run Saturday at 11 a.m. followed at 12 noon by the 4A boys. The 2A (319-and-under) girls compete at 1 p.m. and the 2A boys at 2 p.m.

Hardware is plentiful. Trophies are awarded to the top four teams in each division, 5A through 2A; medals go to all top seven of the first- and second-place teams in each division; and medals are presented to the top 20 individual finishers in each race.

By qualifying full teams at Wednesday's conference meet, run on an overcast day with temperatures in the mid 50s, Wood River can now enter a maximum seven boys and seven girls in Saturday's races.

The Wolverine boys coached by Monte Brothwell and the girls coached by Shari Kunz and Julie Carney plan to take nine boys and nine girls to Circling Ravens.

Brothwell was the 1972 State Class B champion, one year after his teammate Rick Ward won. Lori Pascoe and Maureen McGinnis won back-to-back Class B titles in 1981-82.

Competing in 2A for The Community School coached by Rick Kapala and Chris Mallory are Torin Tucker and Morgan Atkinson.
