I am a homeowner in Blaine County, a teacher in the Blaine County School District and a supporter of the current levy proposal. Nine years ago, I was instrumental in helping launch our school district's dual-language immersion program. I have taught in the program since then, and have watched it develop to the point that it is now a model for other districts to follow in Idaho and across the United States.
I know the previous 10-year levy, set to expire in 2010, has enabled the district to support innovative, effective academic programs like dual immersion. The proposed levy is no different: Because it provides funding for facilities, it enables the district to guard the funds designed for classroom use, and use them just for the classroom rather than for facilities.
The $12 monthly fee that the average homeowner currently pays for the existing levy, and would continue to pay to support the proposed levy, is a small price for programs like dual immersion, pre-school, academies and all-day kindergarten that have been implemented during the past 10 years.
Therefore, I encourage you to vote yes on Oct. 29 for the preservation of our model school district.
