In the contested election for Hailey City Council on Nov. 3 there is only one choice for that seat that makes sense—Martha Burke. While I have only known Martha for a short time, I have always been impressed by her dedication to the city of Hailey and the giving of her time, not only for the needs of our city but also for her countless hours spent as a member and now chair of the Friedman Memorial Airport Authority. Add to this her work with the Advocates and a variety of charities in the Wood River Valley and you have the person needed on the City Council.
I spent the time to view the recent Pizza and Politics debate and would like to make my points based upon Tony St. George's responses.
If you have no idea what needs to change, "just that change needs to occur," then why are you running? We need constructive answers.
If you think the debate about the airport is over you have not been paying attention. The citizens of Hailey need your support in making sure the airport moves. Just ask all your fellow citizens in Woodside what they think and feel about the noise and safety issues.
If you can't provide a clear answer on which part of your funding comes from north valley residents or developers, then we need to wonder what will influence you despite your request to "trust me."
If you want to provide a fresh perspective to the council to help change things, then you really should attend City Council meetings to understand the problems it faces and the limitations of your role. How do you know unless you go?
When you consider Martha's time and dedication compared to her opponent, the differences are clear. With her opponent you get the influence of Ketchum developer money trying to buy their way into Hailey city business. Martha has pledged to only accept money from Hailey residents. Don't let Hailey go the way of Ketchum. Our city has become the most vibrant in the valley and needs to stay that way.
Vote for Martha Burke on Nov. 3.
