Vote no on levy

Please vote no tomorrow on the school district's proposed $59.8 million levy. This levy is about the BCSD's wants, not needs. Far from focusing on necessary repairs, the majority of this levy will be $30 million spent on geothermal projects for our existing schools. This taxpayer investment would not break even for at least 100 years.

The school district has just completed a self-proclaimed 10-year "building plan." Instead of simply handing the district these dollars for the next decade, please vote no on this levy, and insist on a 10-year focus on curriculum and instruction. That's an investment that will pay off almost immediately.

Out of approximately 6,000 responses in the community survey conducted by the school district in 2007, less than 1 percent mentioned a desire for new facilities or upgrades. Many people mentioned sustainability, but only in terms of recycling, nutritious foods, gardens, etc. Sustainability was never construed as an endless construction mandate by our community.

Don't waste green to "go green."
