Control your pets

I just witnessed the most horrific death of a deer on Highway 75. It was completely preventable.

I was southbound and saw a pair of golden retrievers from the Woodside area chase two does onto the highway. I was able to miss the first doe, but a northbound vehicle struck the second, killing it instantly. The dogs immediately went to the dead deer on the road, creating yet another hazard to anyone traveling during the valley's rush hour.

Since this incident occurred around 5:15 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 5, my very strong suspicion is that the dog's owner arrived home from work, was too lazy/irresponsible to walk the dogs, so just let them out to run.

Dog owners need to be aware of the consequences of their actions. You have a responsibility not only to the safety of your animals, but also to the wildlife they encounter and to people, whether they are pedestrians, cyclists or riding in a vehicle.

The owner of these dogs should be grateful that no people were killed, and realize that the next time the outcome may not be as fortunate. Let this be a reminder to all of us to please be more careful.
