Stop the idling

I wrote last spring about the blight of motorists who leave their vehicles unattended with the engine running, fouling the air with pollutants and noise for no reason. I was pleased to see the Ketchum City Council address this issue by passing an ordinance that makes this conduct subject to a fine of $100 for a first offence and $300 for subsequent violations. In an abundance of leniency, the City Council opted to start with a year of notice before such fines will be levied. This is unfortunate, because the problem persists.

This morning I witnessed a truck idling, unoccupied between Atkinsons' and the Police Department, for far longer than three minutes. Perhaps another way to encourage good citizenship in this regard is to not patronize businesses that violate this ordinance and impose unnecessary pollution on the community.
