The Advocates announces new officers

Former psychiatric social worker Margery Friedlander has been appointed president of the Advocates for Survivors of Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault, a Hailey-based nonprofit organization. Hailey police Lt. Steve England has been appointed secretary.

According to a press release from the organization, the Advocates also elected three new members for its board of directors—Paul Hansen, Lenore Carroll and Dana Thomas.

Friedlander, who has lived in the valley for over 10 years and has been an active community volunteer, spent 20 years as a social worker and psychotherapist in New York and Connecticut.

England will provide an important connection between the organization and area law enforcement, the press release stated.

Hansen is a retired business owner from Seattle and provides financial and business expertise to the organization.

Carroll is a real estate and marketing professional. The press release stated that she brings her experience in fundraising, event planning and public relations to the board. As a past recipient of the services of the Advocates, Dana Thomas will help educate the community about the need for shelter services and prevention and education programs.

The Advocates provides services to more than 400 women and 100 children annually.

Reservoir construction begins

The Sun Valley Water and Sewer District has found a suitable water reservoir site to serve areas within Elkhorn and the Lane Ranch vicinity, and has received permission from the Lane Ranch Partnership to move forward. The potential site is on property north of Elkhorn Road and east of Weyyakin.

Pat McMahon, district general manager, said four holes are being drilled on site to see if the ground is stable enough to support a large reservoir. For the next several weeks, people may hear equipment, such as the core drilling rig, or notice vehicles accessing the property from Elkhorn Road.

Preschool to hold open house

Children ages 2 to 5 and their parents are invited to attend the Mountain Springs Preschool Puppet Show and Open House on Friday, Oct. 23, at 10 a.m.

Mountain Springs is a Waldorf-inspired school near Bellevue. For registration, call 539-2424.

Special Olympics wins event honors

Readers of Sports Travel magazine gave top honors to the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games for Sports Event of the Year and Best Amateur Multi-Sports Event.

The awards were presented in New Orleans at TEAMS 2009, a large gathering of sports-event organizers, held Oct. 13-17.

The 2009 World Games beat the 2008 Olympic Summer Games, Super Bowl XLIII, the 2008 Major League Baseball All-Star Game and 2009 NHL Stanley Cup Finals.

Zou 75 wins 'Epicurean Evening'

St. Luke's Magic Valley Health Foundation held its 18th annual Epicurean Evening on Saturday, Sept. 12, raising over $85,000 for its cancer care programs at St. Luke's Mountain States Tumor Institute. The event featured food prepared by 14 chefs, including executive chef Skyler Barker and head sushi chef Derek Holliday from Zou 75 in Hailey.

Zou 75 won the Judges' Choice Award and the People's Choice Award for its sushi dishes. Zou 75 owners Rob and Kris Cronin are directors for volunteers and community relations for Camp Rainbow Gold, a summer camp for kids with cancer at Cathedral Pines, north of Ketchum.

Hailey seeks commissioners

The city of Hailey is looking for a few committed volunteers to serve as commissioners on the Historic Preservation Commission and the Blaine County Housing Authority.

The 10-member Historic Preservation Commission focuses on the documentation and preservation of Hailey history.

The Blaine County Housing Authority is a seven-member commission with one Hailey appointee working to secure community housing opportunities in Blaine County.

Anyone interested in serving on either of these commissions should submit a letter of interest to Hailey Mayor Rick Davis.

Arts promote climate awareness day

International Day of Climate Awareness will take place Saturday, Oct. 24. The day will be recognized by The Community School's Environmental Club's "Environmental Art Show" at the Coffee Grinder in Ketchum from 4-6 p.m. All the art will be available for auction. Proceeds will be used to support projects devoted to lowering CO2 emissions in the Wood River Valley.

In addition, a free screening of the futuristic documentary film "The Age of Stupid" by Franny Armstrong will take place at 7 p.m. at Light on the Mountains south of Ketchum. Greenpeace activist leader Veronica Leonard will present the film. For details, call (208) 944-9612.
