Caulkins is a winner again, so are swimmers; volleyball tries to stay alive

Cross country at Mountain Home

When it comes to stockpiling state championship trophies, Mountain View Mavericks' prep cross country coach Tracy Harris hasn't quite arrived in the rarified air of Jerome's Tim Dunne, Highland's Bob Conley or Firth's Brett Hill.

But Harris, one of Idaho's top distance runners for many years, has been getting there fast in just 10 years as a Gem State running coach. He captured six state titles for the Meridian Warriors, and added the 5A crowns for the Mountain View 2006 boys and 2008 girls.

This year, Harris might just get the boys' and girls' double gold that eluded him in 2008. He brought his Mountain View runners to the Mountain Home Invitational Thursday and the Mavericks simply ran away with the boys' and girls' titles.

Wood River High School coach Monte Brothwell, one of Harris' contemporaries in the ranks of the top Gem State footracers, brought 22 of his runners to the 278-runner varsity and junior varsity field at Canyon Cove Golf Course. Sickness took its toll on the boys, but Hailey produced the winner.

Senior Chase Caulkins, top-ranked among Idaho 4A boys, bounced back from sickness to win by 20 seconds on the 3.3-mile course with a time of 17:10. It was his third race win of the 2009 season. Sophomore Corrine Smith (22:40) topped the varsity girls in 17th place.

Next is the Great Basin Conference 4A district competition Thursday, Oct. 22 at 4 p.m. on the College of Southern Idaho campus, Twin Falls. It is a qualifier for the State 4A meet Oct. 31 in northern Idaho.

Spikers go 1-1 on first night of Great Basin

Riding the hitting of seniors Grace Lagodich and Ellen Johnson, the Wood River High School varsity volleyball team won a match and lost a match Monday during the first day of Great Basin Conference 4A volleyball tournament action at Twin Falls High School.

Third-seeded Wood River (18-16) defeated #6 Burley 25-19, 25-12, 25-18 but just couldn't get over the hump in a subsequent 26-24, 26-24, 25-20 loss to #2-seeded Minico of Rupert. Top-seeded Twin Falls needed five games to beat #4 Jerome in a second-round match Monday.

On Tuesday night, Wood River waited for the winner of an elimination match between Jerome and Burley and then tried to stay alive in the three-day, double elimination meet. Twin Falls, unbeaten in league, clashed with Minico Tuesday for an automatic state berth.
