Thirty-three figure skating clubs from Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming sent their top freeskaters to the Northwest Pacific Regional Figure Skating Championships staged at Medford, Ore. Oct. 8-12.

And Shayna Moellenberg, 15, of the Sun Valley Figure Skating Club, captured the silver medal in Novice Ladies. Shayna's flawless performance in the Short Program put her in first place going into the Long Program. She was second overall, competing in a field of 20.

Her second place finish qualifies Shayna for the Pacific Coast Sectional Championships at Jackson Hole Wyo. Nov. 17-21. The top four competitors in Wyoming will advance to the National Championships in Spokane, Wash. in Jan. 2010.

Shayna is coached in Sun Valley by Lisa-Marie Allen and Gia Guddat and trains with Keri Herlinger at High Altitude Fitness.

Alexandra Harten, 12, a Community School seventh grader, also returned as a medalist from Medford. Harten won bronze for placing third in Pre-Juvenile girls, final non-qualifying level of freeskate.

Harten plans to test through Juvenile to compete in Intermediate Ladies Freeskate next spring. Harten's coach is Holly Wheeler. She also trains with Guddat, Judy Blumberg, Craig Heath, Karel and Amanda Kovar and Jozef Sabovcik.

Bringing home two regional championships medals in the same year is a Sun Valley Figure Skating Club record and raises the level of competitive skating coming from the SVFSC, club publicity chair Andrea Nelson noted.

The last Sun Valley skater to qualify for the Pacific Coast Sectional Championships was Sierra Dickens in 2003.
