Panther defense, special teams provide 72-6 win

Two games left until Sawtooth playoffs

Senior Gonzalo Zarate runs to daylight during Carey High School’s 48-0 Sawtooth Conference victory over Camas County in Fairfield Oct. 9.

In a game shortened to 24 minutes by the 45-point mercy rule, the Carey School Panthers defeated the Jackpot (Nev.) Jaguars 72-6 Friday at Carey's Derrick Parke Memorial Field in a Sawtooth Conference eight-man football encounter.

Carey football teams have scored 60 or more points on many occasions over the years, but Friday's mismatch was the first time in memory the Panthers have exceeded 70. And it was because of the Panther defense and special teams play that the score ended up so high.

The Panthers tallied two of their 10 touchdowns on special teams—thanks to 60-yard and 66-yard punt returns by senior Dillon Simpson—and two more TDs on defense due to fumble recoveries by sophomore Charlie Rivera and junior Shane Bingham. Two long scoring runs and three TD passes by Carey ended the game early.

Senior Wacey Barg caught two touchdown passes, junior quarterback Caleb Cenarrusa tossed a pair of TD aerials, Rivera scored twice including an 80-yard TD gallop and senior Todd Peck scored his first touchdown of the campaign.

Senior Todd Peck (4 tackles, 4 assists) led the swarming Carey defense that provided coach Lane Kirkland's Panthers (6-1, 5-1 league) with their third consecutive league victory. Jackpot (0-7, 0-7) remained winless on the season.

Defending state champion Carey moved one game closer to clinching the second seed in the Sawtooth Conference for the State 1A Division 2 playoffs starting Nov. 6. One hurdle remains—and it's a formidable one in the Rockland Bulldogs especially when the rivalry is played at "The Dog Pound."

Coach Kirkland said, "Rockland always seems to be tall and thick. They'll give us a good game and we need it going into the playoffs." Opening kickoff is Friday, Oct. 23 at 4 p.m. at Rockland's gridiron.

There have been many close games between Carey and Rockland, but none recently. Carey owns three straight wins by a 159-14 score. Carey has won 11 consecutive games over Rockland since a 38-0 setback at "The Dog Pound" in 1996.

Rockland (3-3, 3-3 league) saw its playoff hopes dwindle last Friday with a 34-28 home loss to Dietrich (4-3, 4-2). Now, Richfield's Tigers (3-4, 2-4) and Murtaugh's Red Devils (4-4, 3-4) are on the outside looking in for one of four playoff berths from the Sawtooth Conference

Currently, the race for the Sawtooth's third seed in the playoffs and a likely date with Carey Nov. 6 in Carey will come down to Dietrich's game with North Gem (5-2, 5-1) the final week of the 2009 season. Top-seeded Mackay (7-0, 6-0) will host the Dietrich-North Gem loser in the first round.

The Idahosports.com rankings of the 1A Division 2 teams has #1 Mackay to go with #2 Kootenai (7-0), #3 Carey, #4 North Gem of Bancroft and #5 Salmon River of Riggins.
