Carey, WRHS spikers win on “Senior Nights”

Tournament opens Oct. 21 at Dietrich

Wood River High School and Carey School varsity volleyball teams nailed down the third seeds in their respective conference tournaments Tuesday night with convincing "Senior Night" home league wins.

The Wolverines (16-15, 5-4 league) beat the Jerome Tigers 25-9, 25-14, 25-15 behind strong efforts by seniors Grace Lagodich, Monica Garceau. Whitnee Dudley and Ellen Johnson. Freshman Lily Richards served nine straight winners to finish the second game victory.

Wood River finished its regular season in Twin Falls Thursday night against Canyon Ridge—and the Wolverines will open 4A Great Basin Conference tournament action against #6 Canyon Ridge Monday, Oct. 19 at 5 p.m. at Twin Falls High.

One team will be eliminated from the six-school GBC meet Monday night, then matches continue Tuesday, Oct. 20 and Wednesday, Oct. 21. The top two Great Basin teams advance to the State 4A tournament Oct. 30 in northern Idaho.

Meanwhile, the Carey Panthers made their case to be one of three Northside Conference teams heading north to Lewiston Oct. 30-31 for the State 1A Division 2 tourney. Now, the Panthers have to prove it at next week's Northside Conference tournament.

Carey (12-6, 8-4 league) won their sixth match in the last seven starts 25-19, 25-19, 25-21 over #4-seeded Richfield (6-9, 6-5 league). And the Panthers added another win by forfeit Thursday night against the Murtaugh Red Devils (illness).

The Panthers will play the #6-seeded Community School (5-8, 3-8 league) Wednesday, Oct. 21 in the second match of the night, at Dietrich's gym. The first match at 4 p.m. will have Richfield going against #5 Magic Valley Christian.

Wednesday's final first-round match will have #2 Dietrich playing #7 Murtaugh, then top-seeded Camas County will go against the winner of Richfield-Magic Valley Christian to end the first day. Matches continue Thursday, Oct. 22 and Saturday, Oct. 24.
