Grant will fund traffic enforcement

Hailey police chief wants more public involvement

As the result of a $12,000 grant from the Idaho Transportation Department, Hailey police will be stepping up their traffic enforcement activities.

Receipt of the grant, announced Wednesday, will allow Hailey to participate in various ITD traffic enforcement campaigns throughout fiscal year 2010. Police Chief Jeff Gunter said the funding will contribute overtime pay for Hailey officers.

The next ITD campaign will run from Oct. 18-24. It will focus on speed limit violations in school zones, an offense that can cost an errant driver a minimum of $100 plus court costs.

"We will be doing six dedicated shifts on speed enforcement during that time period," Gunter said. "The $12,000 from ITD puts extra cops on the street at no cost to the city. One thing I am committed to improving is traffic enforcement."

Today is Gunter's third anniversary as Hailey's police chief. Overall, he said he is "pleased with the department" but added that he would like more public involvement in law enforcement.

"What I would like to improve is interaction with the community," he said.

Information can be kept confidential, for example, if it involves family members or neighbors, Gunter said.

The police chief can be reached by e-mail at j.gunter@haileycityhall.org or by telephone at 788-3531. Gunter also invites the public to stop and see him at his office at Hailey City Hall.
