Great Basin volleyball opens Monday

WRHS will travel south for openers

The Wood River High School varsity volleyball team coached by Tim Richards and Gary Carr will be packing its bags for probably the rest of the 2009 season after hosting Jerome for "Senior Night," on Tuesday.

Wood River's match against Jerome was a consequential one that determined the third seed in the six-school Great Basin Conference tournament beginning Monday, Oct. 19 at either Twin Falls or Minico.

Coach B.J. Price's Twin Falls Bruins frontrunners (12-4, 9-0 league) will try to run the Great Basin table Thursday, Oct. 15 with a match against Minico (9-3, 7-1) in Rupert.

Tuesday night in Hailey, the Wolverines (14-14, 4-4 league) and Jerome (4-13, 3-5) battled for the third seed, Wood River having won the previous meeting in four games at Jerome Sept. 24. The winner is likely to open Monday's tournament against #6-seeded Canyon Ridge in the 5 p.m. match.

Wood River will play two tournament matches Monday. One team will be eliminated Monday, and the other five teams will return to the homecourt of the league's top-seeded team, either Twin Falls or Minico, on Tuesday, Oct. 20.

Championship match is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 22. The top two teams will qualify for the State 4A tournament Oct. 30 in northern Idaho.

Wood River split its triangular meet at Twin Falls last Saturday—losing to Twin Falls 25-15, 25-16, 25-17 and beating Pocatello for the second time this season 25-10, 25-13.
