Wood River Middle School teacher Jonah J. Torseth was sentenced Tuesday to 14 days in jail after pleading guilty earlier to DUI.

Torseth was given credit for two days already spent behind bars and will be allowed to serve the remainder of his sentence on six consecutive weekends.

Magistrate Court Judge Jason Walker also fined Torseth $500, placed him on two years probation and ordered him to do 40 hours of community service.

Torseth was originally charged with aggravated DUI, a felony, for hitting a pedestrian with his vehicle on Main Street in Hailey on the evening of Dec. 30, 2008. He entered into a plea agreement with the Blaine County Prosecuting Attorney's Office and pleaded guilty in August to misdemeanor DUI.

Torseth, who was 33 at the time of the accident, remains employed with the Blaine County School District, which declined Tuesday to say what, if any, disciplinary action might be taken against him.

"We are a drug-free school and we will follow our policies," said Katie Palmer, the district's director of human resources. "We are aware of Jonah's situation and we are doing our jobs."
