Winning comes in waves for WRHS swimmers

Two more wins at Wood River YMCA pool

The Wood River High School girls' swimming team remained unbeaten for the 2009 fall season, and the Wolverine boys also won their home meet Saturday, Oct. 3 at the Wood River Community YMCA pool.

Coach Brian Gallagher's Wood River girls outdistanced second-place Twin Falls 187-75 in the nine-school meet. With fewer swimmers, six compared to the 11 girls, Wood River's boys still came out ahead of Century of Pocatello 116-77.

Wood River's girls won all three relays with Lena Friesen, Taylor Coiner, Michael Coiner, Tayler Bates, Colby Werley, Elizabeth Fry and Tori Emerick. The boys captured two relays featuring Jon Atkinson, JT Sutton, Gene Fairbrother, Adam Potts and Bryce Ervin.

The Wood River girls won all but two individual events with gold medals going to Michael Coiner, Taylor Coiner, Lena Friesen. Taking individual first places for the boys were Jon Atkinson, Gene Fairbrother and JT Sutton.

Honored as graduating seniors in their final home meet were six Wood River swimmers—Melissa Becker, Michael Coiner, Taylor Coiner, Jon Atkinson, Matt Lichtenberg and Gene Fairbrother.

Nearly all the team members have met qualifying times for November's state championships in Boise. Here are team standings and individual WRHS placings from last Saturday's meet in Ketchum:

Boys' teams: 1—WRHS 116. 2—Century 77. 3—Kimberly 48. 4—Marsh Valley 39. 5—Twin Falls High School 23. 6—Pocatello 21. 7—Minico 15. 8—Highland 10. 9—Xavier 3. 10—Jerome 2. 11—Canyon Ridge 1.

Boys: Jon Atkinson 1—50 free and 2—100 free. Bryce Ervin 6—100 breast and 6—100 free. Gene Fairbrother 1—200 free and 3—100 back. Matt Lichtenberg 5—100 breast and 12—100 free. Adam Potts 2—200 free and 7—100 free. JT Sutton 1—100 free and 2—50 free.

Girls' teams: 1—WRHS 187. 2—Twin Falls High School 75. 3—Century 56. 4—Pocatello 47. 5—Highland 25. 6—Minico 10. 7—Marsh Valley 4. 8—Kimberly 3. 9—Canyon Ridge 1.
